Project is currently under construction.
Located in Denmark Western Australia, the Thornton Residence features a floor to ceiling glazed living area that floats over the grassed paddocks of the site. Extensive views are harnessed of the Wilson Inlet beyond. Minimal building mass to the north enables the interior to reach out into the landscape. Extensive northern glazing maximizes solar heat gain in winter whilst deep window reveals and roof overhangs minimize solar penetration in summer.
The slender form of the new building is designed to not overpower the adjacent existing farm cottage. The predominate charred timber cladding of the new building references the timber history of the site and juxtaposes the white weatherboard cladding of the cottage. Connectivity between the two buildings is through a retained walkway and timber decking that conveys a gentle conversation between old and new with a transition of materials.
