Inlet Drive Residence

Located in Denmark adjacent to the Wilson Inlet the site has a narrow east west orientation with a heavily timbered western entry and a steep embankment down to the inlet to the east. The narrow width of the block created design challenges to overcome planning restrictions on setbacks and privacy. Designed for clients with a deep connection to the place the form takes inspiration from the surrounding coastal environment.
Referencing the granite boulders on the water’s edge the house is a sequence of undulating forms which orientate themselves to the extensive views. Each component is carefully positioned to sit lightly on the landscape. A northern courtyard protected from the strong summer sea breeze maximises solar gain in winter. An undercover outdoor area to the south captures inlet views and provides protection from winter storms.
Weathered timber cladding references an existing timber fishing shack. Perforated corten steel privacy screens and off form concrete retaining walls are in keeping with the raw coastal environment. Brick outdoor living areas connect into the landscape.
A centrally located concrete thermal mass wall moderates internal temperatures. The wall features integrated stonework by a local artist. Cabinetwork is finished with a mix of whitewashed timber and stone benchtops in keeping with the coastal feel. A granite fireplace, timber lining, burnished concrete floors, and ceramic tiling in the bathrooms complete the raw material palette.
Passive design principals such as the highly insulated and air-tight building envelope result in a thermally comfortable house without the need for air conditioning. High-performance double-glazed windows capture views whilst not compromising thermal performance. Solar gain in summer is minimised through a combination of window hoods and a large sliding screen. Automated louvred windows to the east passively cool the house taking advantage of the summer sea breeze. A solar PV energy system and heat pump hot water unit highlight the projects commitment to sustainability.
